Murphy was catastrophically wounded on April 25th 2006 on his second tour by an Improvised Explosive Devise, which removed his right leg, and mangled his left. Murphy received the Purple Heart and spent his last year as a soldier at Walter Reed Army Medical Center where he received 27 surgeries and extensive physical therapy.
